Braces in Hawaii for Kids, Teens & Adults

Orthodontist for Kids, Teens & Adults In Hilo

About Braces

The decision to enhance your smile with braces can be both exciting and life-changing. At Hawaii Smile Designs, we’re dedicated to offering our patients the most advanced orthodontic treatments available. One such innovative option is self-ligating braces, a modern take on traditional braces that offers a host of benefits designed to improve your treatment experience and results.

have long been used to correct misaligned teeth and jaws, improving oral health and providing patients with beautifully straight smiles. Traditional braces consist of brackets attached to the teeth, connected by wires that gently guide the teeth into their correct positions over time. While highly effective, traditional braces often require frequent adjustments and the use of elastic bands, which can sometimes lead to discomfort and longer treatment times.

Self-ligating braces streamline the orthodontic process by eliminating the need for elastic or metal ties. Instead, these braces feature a specialized clip or door mechanism on each bracket that holds the wire in place. This design allows the wire to move freely within the bracket, creating less friction and making it easier for the teeth to move into alignment.

The mechanics of self-ligating braces are not just about efficiency; they’re also about precision. The reduced resistance and absence of ties mean that our expert orthodontists at Hawaii Smile Designs can achieve more accurate tooth positioning with potentially fewer adjustments needed throughout your treatment.

Benefits of Self-Ligating Brackets

Choosing self-ligating braces offers several advantages over traditional braces:

  • Reduced Discomfort — The smooth movement of wires and lack of elastic bands mean that self-ligating braces are often more comfortable to wear.
  • Shorter Appointments — Without the need to change elastics, adjustment appointments are quicker and more straightforward.
  • Potentially Faster Treatment — The efficiency of self-ligating mechanisms can sometimes reduce overall treatment time.
  • Improved Oral Hygiene — With fewer components on the braces, self-ligating brackets are easier to clean around, helping maintain better oral hygiene during treatment.
  • Aesthetically Pleasing — Many self-ligating brackets are designed to be sleek and less noticeable, offering a more aesthetic option for those concerned about the appearance of braces.

At Hawaii Smile Designs, we understand that each patient’s orthodontic needs are unique. Our experienced team is committed to providing personalized care that aligns with your specific goals and lifestyle. By choosing self-ligating braces with us, you’re not just getting a state-of-the-art orthodontic solution; you’re also receiving care from a practice that values comfort, efficiency, and excellence in every aspect of treatment.

Braces for Kids

At Hawaii Smile Designs, we understand that every child’s smile is a gateway to confidence, health, and happiness. Our dedicated team specializes in providing personalized orthodontic care for our youngest patients, ensuring their experience with braces is positive, effective, and tailored to meet their unique needs.

Determining the perfect time to start orthodontic treatment can significantly impact the effectiveness of braces. In agreement with the American Association of Orthodontics, we recommend an initial orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. This doesn’t mean braces will be immediately necessary, but it allows us to identify any potential issues early on and decide the optimal time to begin treatment.

For many kids, braces are typically introduced during their pre-teen or early teenage years, once most of their permanent teeth have erupted. However, early intervention in some cases can help guide jaw growth, correct harmful oral habits, and improve the appearance and function of your child’s teeth.

We believe that orthodontic treatment should be a fun and engaging experience for kids. Our office is designed to be welcoming and child-friendly, helping to ease any anxieties and make each visit something to look forward to. We encourage kids to get involved in their treatment, whether it’s choosing the color of their bands or learning about how their braces work.

While the primary goal of braces is to align teeth, the benefits extend far beyond aesthetics. Braces can improve oral health by correcting bite issues and making teeth easier to clean, thus reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Additionally, orthodontic treatment can enhance speech, chewing functionality, and overall facial symmetry.

Choosing the right orthodontist is crucial for your child’s comfort and the success of their treatment. At Hawaii Smile Designs, our experienced orthodontists and staff are passionate about creating a supportive, fun, and reassuring environment for kids and their families. We’re committed to using the latest orthodontic technologies and treatment methods to ensure the best outcomes for our young patients.

Braces For Teens

At Hawaii Smile Designs, we’re dedicated to providing our teen patients with orthodontic solutions that not only transform their smiles but also boost their confidence during these crucial years. We understand that wearing braces is a significant part of many teenagers’ lives, which is why we offer a range of options tailored to meet their unique needs, preferences, and lifestyles.

The teenage years are an ideal time for orthodontic treatment. Most, if not all, permanent teeth have erupted, making it easier to identify and correct misalignments and bite issues. Addressing these concerns during the teen years can prevent more serious dental problems down the road, promoting a lifetime of healthy smiles.

While the immediate advantage of braces might seem purely cosmetic, the truth is, the benefits run much deeper:

  • Boosted Self-Esteem — There’s no denying the impact a confident smile can have on a teenager’s self-esteem. Braces can transform smiles, improving the way teens feel about themselves and how they interact with the world around them.
  • Improved Oral Health — Straight teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Properly aligned teeth and jaws also mean better chewing functionality, aiding in digestion and overall health.
  • Prevention of Future Dental Issues — Correcting alignment issues early can prevent more serious problems later on. This includes reducing the risk of tooth damage from uneven wear and alleviating joint stress that can lead to TMJ issues.
  • Enhanced Speech — Misaligned teeth or jaw structure can affect speech. Braces help in rectifying conditions that hinder clear speech, empowering teens with the confidence to express themselves freely.
  • A Lifelong Investment — While the teenage years might seem fleeting, the benefits of braces during this pivotal time last a lifetime. A healthy, straight smile contributes to both personal and professional opportunities down the road.

We believe that braces should reflect a teenager’s personality and fit into their life seamlessly. We also recognize that teenagers lead busy lives filled with school, sports, and social activities. Our team at Hawaii Smile Designs is committed to making the orthodontic process as smooth and hassle-free as possible. We provide flexible scheduling, including after-school appointments, and our friendly staff is always here to answer questions, offer advice, and give encouragement.

Orthodontic treatment does more than create beautiful smiles; it also improves oral health by making teeth easier to clean and reducing the risk of decay and gum disease. Additionally, properly aligned teeth and jaws can alleviate issues such as chewing difficulties, speech impediments, and abnormal wear on tooth surfaces.

Braces For Adults

At Hawaii Smile Designs, we firmly believe that it’s never too late to achieve the smile of your dreams. Our adult patients come to us with stories and aspirations as unique as their smiles. Whether you’re seeking to boost your confidence, improve oral health, or correct long-standing dental concerns, our team is committed to providing personalized, discreet, and effective orthodontic solutions tailored to adult lifestyles and needs.

In recent years, there’s been a significant increase in the number of adults choosing to undergo orthodontic treatment. Advances in technology have made braces more comfortable, less noticeable, and more efficient than ever before. These developments, coupled with a growing awareness of the importance of oral health and aesthetics, mean that more adults are deciding to invest in their smiles.

Opting for braces as an adult can bring about transformative benefits, not just cosmetically, but also for your dental health and overall well-being:

  • Enhanced Self-Esteem — A straight, well-aligned smile can significantly impact your self-confidence, influencing personal, social, and professional interactions.
  • Improved Oral Health — Straight teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of decay, gum disease, and tooth loss. Proper alignment can also alleviate issues such as abnormal wear of tooth enamel and jaw discomfort.
  • Correct Bite Issues — Addressing overbites, underbites, or crossbites can improve chewing functionality and reduce stress on the temporomandibular joints, preventing TMJ disorders.
  • A Lifetime of Smiles — It’s an investment in your future. Achieving a healthy, beautiful smile can contribute to better oral health outcomes as you age, potentially reducing the need for more extensive dental work down the line.

Understanding that adults have different considerations than younger patients, such as career commitments and social engagements, Hawaii Smile Designs offers a variety of treatment options designed to fit seamlessly into your lifestyle:

  • Discreet Solutions — We provide options that minimize the visual impact of treatment, including clear aligners and ceramic braces. These solutions allow you to undergo orthodontic treatment without compromising your professional appearance.
  • Efficient Treatment Options — Our use of the latest technology and techniques ensures that your treatment is as time-efficient as possible, reducing the duration you spend in braces while still achieving optimal results.
  • Flexible Scheduling — We recognize the busy lives our adult patients lead. Our practice offers flexible appointment times to accommodate your schedule, ensuring that your orthodontic treatment complements your lifestyle.

We’re dedicated to creating a welcoming, supportive environment where you can feel at ease discussing your orthodontic goals. Braces FAQ

How long will I need to wear braces?

The duration of your treatment with braces will vary depending on the complexity of your case and your individual response to treatment. On average, most people wear braces for 1-2 years. During your initial consultation, our team will assess your needs and provide a more accurate estimate of your treatment timeline, along with all costs associated with treatment.

How much do braces cost?

The cost of braces varies depending on several factors, including the complexity of the case, the type of braces chosen, and the duration of treatment. During your initial consultation, we’ll provide you with an estimate based on a thorough examination of your unique needs. We believe everyone deserves a beautiful smile, so we offer various payment plans to make treatment accessible to as many patients as possible.

How do self-ligating braces work?

Self-ligating braces are a modern alternative to traditional braces, designed to improve the efficiency and comfort of orthodontic treatment. They use a specialized clip or door mechanism to hold the archwire in place, eliminating the need for elastic or metal ties. This allows the wire to move more freely, leading to potentially faster and more comfortable tooth alignment.

The key difference in self-ligating braces lies in their unique ligation method. The brackets feature a built-in mechanism that securely holds the archwire, enabling it to slide back and forth within the bracket. This sliding mechanism reduces friction and resistance, allowing teeth to move more naturally and often more quickly than with traditional braces.

How do I keep my teeth and braces clean?

Brush your teeth for two minutes after every meal with a soft-bristled, small-headed toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. As an alternative, you can use a powered toothbrush to increase your brushing effectiveness. Brush the outside and inside surfaces of your teeth using small, gentle, circular motions while positioning the head of the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line. Brush your teeth’s chewing surfaces and the inside surface of your front teeth using short, gentle, back-and-forth motions. Pay close attention to the areas around your brackets or other appliances.

Flossing after every meal will also help keep your teeth and braces clean, which will also help keep your treatment time on track. To floss with braces, use a floss threader or special orthodontic floss to thread the floss behind each wire. Wrap the ends of the floss around your pointer fingers of both hands, leaving a few inches of taut floss between them. Gently slide the floss between each set of teeth using a back and forth motion. Floss the sides of each tooth beneath the gum line to remove plaque and food particles. Repeat this process until you’ve flossed all of your teeth. If you find that your floss is not removing all of the food particles between your teeth and around your braces, ask us about a water flosser!

Do I still need to wear a retainer after treatment?

Yes, wearing a retainer after any orthodontic treatment is crucial to maintaining your new smile. Teeth have a tendency to shift back to their original positions, and retainers help preserve the results achieved through your treatment. We will provide you with a custom-fitted retainer and instructions on how to care for it and your smile post-treatment.
